  15. AB: Many research workers, to save time, rely entirely on either on-line or
  16.     off-line databases offered by an increasing number of information services.
  17.     The characteristics of eight databases, including five on-line services,
  18.     were analysed in the present study concerning the retrieval of information
  19.     on dengue, the most important mosquito-borne viral disease of humans.
  20.     Differences in the rate of retrieval among data-bases were apparent,
  21.     depending on the main subject of publication as well as on the geographical
  22.     location of the publisher. While rates of retrieval of references in
  23.     molecular biology were generally satisfactory (mostly > 70%), those in
  24.     clinical medicine and epidemiology were not (< 50%). The latter, as
  25.     published in many dengue-endemic tropical countries, were found to be
  26.     inadequately covered. For the global surveillance of dengue, which has
  27.     increased in intensity and spread to many countries because of increased
  28.     international travel, the development of a new database emphasizing
  29.     tropical geographic medicine is highly desirable.

  69. AB: Most libraries cannot meet patron demands for biomedical information using
  70.     only their in-house collections. Consequently, many types of libraries
  71.     request biomedical information through interlibrary loan, and these include
  72.     not only academic health sciences libraries, hospital and special
  73.     libraries, but also general libraries. In Nevada, with its small population
  74.     spread over a large geographic area, it has become critical to develop a
  75.     statewide network for sharing biomedical information. As the state resource
  76.     library, the Savitt Medical Library launched an effort to establish a
  77.     network, via DOCLINE, of all Nevada libraries that have health-related
  78.     collections. The process of convincing academic and community college
  79.     libraries to join DOCLINE and the resulting benefits of improved resource
  80.     sharing and cooperative collection development are discussed.

  145.     distributed forms of the major sequence libraries. The indexes conform to
  146.     the specification of those distributed on cd-rom by the EMBL sequence
  147.     library. The programs create entry name, accession number, author and
  148.     freetext indexes and a brief directory index. If a suitable application
  149.     program is given an entry name or accession number these indexes allow
  150.     rapid retrieval of sequences or annotation. Similarly the author and
  151.     freetext indexes provide the data for extremely fast searching on author
  152.     names and "keywords". The indexing programs can create indexes for EMBL,
  153.     Swiss-Prot, GenBANK, PIR and NRL3d libraries. We also describe the
  154.     organisation and use of the different sequence libraries and their index
  155.     files.

  177. AB: OBJECTIVE: To assess the comprehensiveness of Medline and Embase computer
  178.     searches for controlled trials. DESIGN: Comparison of articles found after
  179.     an exhaustive search of the literature with the yield of a Medline or
  180.     Embase search. This was performed for controlled clinical trials on the
  181.     efficacy of three interventions: homoeopathy, ascorbic acid for common
  182.     cold, and ginkgo biloba for intermittent claudication and cerebral
  183.     insufficiency. The number of controlled trials found by exhaustive search
  184.     of the literature was 107, 61 and 45, respectively. RESULTS: For
  185.     homoeopathy, ascorbic acid and ginkgo the proportion of all trials found by
  186.     Medline was 17%, 36% and 31% respectively and for Embase 13%, 25% and 58%
  187.     respectively. After checking of the references in the Medline articles 44%,
  188.     79% and 76% of all trials were identified. After checking of the references
  189.     in the Embase articles 42%, 72% and 93% of all trials were identified.
  190.     About 20% of the articles was not correctly indexed. Of the best trials
  191.     68%, 91% and 83% could be found with Medline and 55%, 82% and 92% of the
  192.     best trials were identified through Embase. CONCLUSIONS: For the topics
  193.     mentioned, Medline and Embase searches are sufficient to get an impression
  194.     of the evidence from controlled trials, but only if references in the
  195.     articles are followed for further evidence. If one wants to get a more
  196.     complete picture, additional search strategies make sense. Of course, this
  197.     picture may be different for other topics.

  215. AB: We have developed a computer database containing information on over 1,000
  216.     human hypoxanthine guanine phosphoribosyl transferase (HPRT) mutants. Both
  217.     published and unpublished data are present. The database itself is
  218.     maintained in a dBASE format (.DBF) and we provide a set of programs to
  219.     examine and extract information from the database. A program to input
  220.     information into the database is also supplied. The database and programs
  221.     are available directly from us or via remote FTP (file transfer protocol)
  222.     using BITNET/INTERNET. All programs require an IBM-compatible computer, the
  223.     MS-DOS operating system (version 3.3 or greater), and a hard disk with
  224.     about 5 megabytes of free disk space. The purpose of the database is 1) to
  225.     allow investigators to contribute their HPRT mutants directly to the
  226.     database in a standardized fashion, and 2) to allow access to the entire
  227.     database with a set of programs that allows manipulation and extraction of
  228.     data. For example, using our programs it is possible to i) order the
  229.     database by base pair position, ii) examine only information regarding
  230.     mutagenesis by a particular agent, iii) search for a particular author, iv)
  231.     create a report which contains selected portions of the database, the
  232.     report can be printed or saved as a file. The database will be updated
  233.     every several months and distributed.

  390. AB: The medical literature has grown to an unmanageable size, and we need to
  391.     develop information systems that provide better accessibility. An internal
  392.     medicine residency program is an ideal setting for developing a system in
  393.     which articles are screened for usefulness in clinical decision making and
  394.     organized to be rapidly accessible and relatively inexpensive to use. In
  395.     our residency training program, we use clinical problem-solving, journal
  396.     club article review, and teaching conference preparation to generate
  397.     appropriate articles from PAPERCHASE (MEDLINE) database searches. With the
  398.     chief resident supervising the process, articles are then selected and
  399.     organized in a computerized article file. The software program, Reference
  400.     Manager (Research Information Systems, Inc., Encinitas, California), stores
  401.     article citations and supports searches using standard, medical subject
  402.     heading vocabulary key words. In an 18-month period, residents have
  403.     collected more than 1800 references appropriate to clinical decision making
  404.     and have established an article file that is now used daily as a medical
  405.     information source.

  478. AB: Science Citation Index (SCI) depends for intellectual content entirely on
  479.     citations by authors, who are sometimes prodded by editors and referees.
  480.     Its patchiness is therefore not surprising, but frequently it gives access
  481.     to relevant and up-to-date documents not easily accessible by other means.
  482.     Two contrasting "citation families" are described. The first family,
  483.     dealing with the various ascorbic acid derivatives having C substitution at
  484.     C-2, actually retrieved very nearly all the relevant documents (other than
  485.     patent specifications) that were retrieved by a CAS ONLINE substructure
  486.     search. Organic chemists are clearly careful authors. The second family,
  487.     dealing with amino acid residues covalently bound in soil organic matter,
  488.     yielded documents having surprisingly little overlap with those retrieved
  489.     by using a carefully devised Boolean "profile" on the general subject index
  490.     of Chemical Abstracts. This was only partly because SCI is beset by
  491.     language-barrier problems to which Chemical Abstracts is immune. The SCI
  492.     management might extend its journal coverage, but otherwise improvement can
  493.     only come from a more serious attitude to placing references in primary
  494.     publications. SCI remains a complement to, not a substitute for, other
  495.     data-bases.

  510.     computer. Both systems are compatible with the two major database
  511.     management programs for manipulating reprint files. Reference Update
  512.     exports directly to Reference Manager (a choice on the main menu).
  513.     Exporting to a file can also be done with one of four formats: Table of
  514.     Contents, MEDLINE, Full, and One Line. To export Reference Update records
  515.     into Pro-Cite, for example, the records must first be downloaded into
  516.     MEDLINE format. Current Contents on Diskette also exports in four different
  517.     formats: MEDLINE, Comma Delimited, Screen Image, and DIALOG. MEDLINE
  518.     corresponds to Reference Manager format, and Comma Delimited corresponds to
  519.     Pro-Cite format. Both products include reprint request systems that can be
  520.     used directly from the programs. The two products share many features and
  521.     differ primarily in terms of journal coverage. Current Contents on Diskette
  522.     provides document delivery by means of the Genuine Article service, and
  523.     Reference Update offers a synonym feature. Both programs are attractive
  524.     alternatives to manual or on-line searching of the biomedical literature.
